Éva

Eva Laszlo was born in Arad on October 6, 1923. Her father came from a German family known as the Hehs family, while her mother, the daughter of Jewish doctors, converted to the Lutheran religion at her husband’s request.

Eva Hehs, her maiden name, became an orphan at the age of 11. Along with her sister Agi, she was raised by distant relatives, and they lived in abject poverty. Her sister passed away in 1950 in Arad.

In 1942, she was offered a soloist position at Radio Budapest. However, the Horthy Hungarian fascist authorities sent her back to Romania because of her mother’s Jewish origins.

On March 6, 1945, she married Laszlo Roth in Arad. In 1948, the Roth family, along with her husband’s mother, moved to Cluj for the opening of the Hungarian Opera, where Eva Laszlo was accepted as a soloist. After a prolific career, she retired from the Hungarian Opera in 1969 but continued to participate and sing in solo shows and concerts, both in Romania and abroad. She passed away in Cluj in December 1995 after a long period of suffering. You can listen to few of her recordings in the Recodings section of this site.
